Suberin is a waxy substance found in higher plants. Suberin is a main constituent of cork, and is named after the Cork Oak, Quercus suber. The compounds in suberin are cross-linked into tight three-dimensional networks that strengthen cell walls and provide resistance to fungal and bacterial attack. This property of suberin makes cork flooring allergen free. Mold spores cannot form on cork flooring. Mold spores are one of the most serious triggers for allergic rhinitis (Hay Fever)And finally, suberin in cork flooring makes the flooring fire retardant.

Peace and Quiet

The complex structure of cork makes it perfect sound insulator for your home. Because cork absorbs vibrations more effectively, you can hear the difference it makes in a room. Its ability to reduce sound transmission and vibration, creates a peaceful experience that everyone will enjoy.

Cushion your step

There’s nothing more important than feeling comfortable in your own home. Cork’s naturally occurring air pockets make it soft and comfortable to walk on. And its unique honeycomb-like structure acts as a natural shock absorber, helping to prevent back and joint pain.

Sustainable

The starting point is a raw material that is extracted cyclically from the cork oak trees without ever damaging them. This raw material is then transformed into high value-added products while promoting the economic and social sustainability of areas at risk of desertification. It is estimated that the Portuguese cork oak forest – montado – is responsible for retaining 5% of the country’s annual CO2 emission, representing 4.8 million tons per year.

Contrary to popular belief, cork is not disappearing. In fact, cork is incredibly sustainable. Made from the outer bark of the cork oak tree, cork is carefully harvested once every 9 years, allowing new bark to grow in its place and without ever damaging or killing the trees. It’s not unusual to have a 200 year-old tree still producing cork bark.
